Sonnets
Each of 128 sonnets is a
discrete song (though themes recur).
As much as the structure grants the reader security of
expectation, it grants the poet potential for richness
of expression.

Selected Poems, 1969-99
 |
Peter
Marin writes about Bill Wallis's verses: "There is a
radical transformation here, a sort of soaring in which you
can see the words take flight. The poems are filled with light,
and I would swear you can perceive object and feelings taking
form within it, as if solidifying themselves inside Bill himself,
somewhere in the heart of the soul. It's quite wonderful to
see." |
| This hand-sized volume contains the poet's best verse, including
the experimental "Redlining San Vicente," the mature
"Reading," and several sequences of poems which
constitute Wallis's most ambitious work. (Nominated for Pulitzer
Prize, Poetry Division, 2000.) |
The shadow of your absence cools my chest.
Far from your sleep, I fall back to dream;
My arms trace your form, as dimensions slide
To align our drifting beds in separate places.

A Dream of Love Fulfilled: Romantic Opera as Literature
| The
author was a professional opera singer, a tenor. His love
of opera, his musical experience, and his literary studies
give him a solid base for analysis and commentary.
The book is for the person who wishes to explore the vast
and fascinating world beneath the surface of opera. It stresses
the literary aspects of La Bohème, emphasizes
the dramatic excellence of Carmen, considers musical
aspects of La Traviata, and examines The Rake's
Progress as visual art. The form and content will not
alienate the beginner or disappoint the reader familiar with
opera.

Selected Essays
 |
William
Wallis the poet has "always valued the essay as a useful
means of sharing information and as a form demanding honesty
of intent and creativity in mode." Recently, however,
he "realized the importance of the essay form" in
his life and education." Now, he sees that "the
essay is a flexible and powerful tool of expression,"
so much so that he wonders whether he has recorded more thought
and experience in prose or in poetry. The thirty essays selected for this volume
cover intellectual and emotional adventures that occurred during the
same period as his Selected Poems, 1969-99. The eight sections into
which the essays are placed include Early, Personal, and Scholastic
compositions. There are Eulogies that stand as essays in their
celebrations of lives. The sections on Lakota (Sioux) Culture,
Religious Conversion, and Opera are quite dense and well-developed.

Altogether, the collection is useful for teachers and students
and rewarding for all the intellectually curious.
